Build Your Own Trooper Sabre

During all of our research involving 18th Century military sabres, we came upon a lot of “odd” antique examples. Many times these unique sabres were the result of repairs or even custom ordered sabres by officers. We thought that we would extend the opportunity to you to build your own sabre as everyone’s needs and preferences differ. We put together a list of parts to choose from so you can mix and match the perfect sabre for you. Guards: Our 1896 pattern “Honeysuckle” guard. This pattern was designed by Wilkinson and had a few iterations. A version of it showed up in 1821 and again in 1848. We offer a close version of the 1896 variant made from 100 grade Domex alloy steel. This guard offers the most hand protection but is also the heaviest in terms of total weight-12.5 oz, 350g. Our 1821 pattern 3 bar guard. While our design is patterned directly from a 1821 British variant, this style guard was adopted all over the world as a mainstay design throughout the 19th century. This guard is made from 100 grade Domex alloy steel and offers great hand protection including over the thumb. It is lighter than the 1896 pattern- 7.8 oz, 225g. Blades: Our 25mm pattern heavy trooper blade is modeled to near exact specifications of the British 1821 pattern heavy cavalry blade. We chose this curved variant of “pipe back” blade over the straighter version of the same era for a couple reasons, first, it follows a common depth of curve that is almost exact to Radaelli’s specified curve- coincidence? This means that our manufacturing techniques would not need to differ greatly when producing our 16mm and 20mm dueling sabre blades. I love the way they handle and how they look even more. The total length of this blade is 35″, 88.8 cm. This blade has a 3mm rolled edge, “Y” or “hollow-ground” cross section and a swelled tip that measures 1/2″, 13mm long by .2″ , 5mm wide. The center of flex is centered in the tip third of the blade and the threads are of grade 8 M6 x 1.25.          Our 23mm pattern light artillery blade is also modeled to near exact specifications of the curved British 1821 pattern heavy cavalry blade. I prefer the lighter blade for it’s maneuverability, but, to each their own. Again, we chose this curved variant of “pipe back” blade over the straighter version of the same era for the same reasons as the 25mm. The total length of this blade is 32.5″, 82.5 cm. This blade has a 3mm rolled edge, “Y” or “hollow-ground” cross section with a swelled tip that measures 1/2″, 13mm long by .2″ , 5mm wide. The center of flex is centered in the tip third of the blade and the threads are of grade 8 M6 x 1.25. Both of these blades are set to F4 , C&T and HEMA Flex (F4)- High stiffness, compliant to SCA Cut & Thrust and HEMA calibration. .5″ – .75″ drop @ 6 oz. (170 gr). Recommended for SCA Cut & Thrust and HEMA armored combat only. Grips: Our 1822 model 3D printed PLA grip is exactly modeled after a British sabre of the namesake year down to every curve and contour. This grip is coated with a rough rubberized coating to ensure a lasting grip, even with large gloves. Our 1853 model 3D printed PLA grip is exactly modeled after a British sabre of the namesake year. This grip shape is straighter and less contoured but in my opinion is more comfortable when wearing large gloves. This grip is also coated with the same rough rubberized coating. Back Cap:  As we prefer to keep our swords modular, a handy detail when it comes to swapping out parts, we designed our exclusive back cap system. This system includes a rounded and contoured cap that reacts in the hand as the “backstrap” of the originals would have but with a distinct advantage. The M6 pin leaves just enough protruding from the curve of the back of the grip to get a small allen wrench on it but does not interfere with the comfort of the grip. This little feature goes a long way in terms of comfort. We designed this system to be universal throughout all of our sabre models including the dueling sabres. This provides a great deal of flexibility when building your sabre.
