Our Scottish Lowland Basket Guard (or the “Mary Rose” as it is often called) is made from 12 ga and 1/4″ 4130 carbon steel. This guard features a complex basket of bars that gives complete coverage to the hand with the added use of short quillions. While we don’t offer much customization to this guard we do offer the 3 finishes: “Bright”, a bright antiqued satin metal finish. “Blued”, a heat blued finish. Naturally darker, more durable and rust prohibitive than chemical bluing. Finally, “Polished”, a bright shiny deep polish that provides the best rust resistance and detail preservation.
We designed this guard to be a great simulator of basket hilts that were popular in the UK in the mid to late 16th century. A really well preserved version of this guard was found under the hull of the shipwreck “Mary Rose” which sank off Portsmouth in 1545. The sword was recovered in an excavation of the site in 1972.
This guard is compatible with our Basic Back Sword Blade, Standard Long Sword Blade, Type XV Blade and Type XI Blade.
