Our Sinclair Basket Guard is made from 12 ga and 1/4″ 4130 carbon steel. This guard features a half clam shell themed plate in the Knuckle side (outside) and a series of bars and thumb ring on the finger side (inside) of the guard that gives near complete coverage to the hand. While we don’t offer much customization to this guard we do offer the 3 finishes: “Bright”, a bright antiqued satin metal finish. “Blued”, a heat blued finish. Naturally darker, more durable and rust prohibitive than chemical bluing. Finally, “Polished”, a bright shiny deep polish that provides the best rust resistance and detail preservation.
We designed this guard to be a near exact replication of Sinclair type sabre hilts that were popular during the late 16th century through the 17th century across Europe. Sometimes called the “Dussage”, “Dussack” or “Tessack”, these guards were paired with a large variation of blade types based on where the sword was made and what kind of combat the sword might encounter. Short curved heavy cutting blades were often used in conjunction with this type of guard for ship board maneuverability and longer straight blades were favored for open field combat. We think this guard is particularly at home on our Standard European Sabre blade.
This guard is compatible with our Basic Back Sword Blade, Standard Long Sword Blade, Type XV Blade, Type XI Blade and Standard Sabre blade.
