Blades

Our blades are hand ground from 2″ x .214 5160 flat bar heat treated to a hardness of 50 Rockwell C. Depending on the blade the taper will either be flat ground as is the case with our Feder blade or diamond distal taper as with our Rapier blades. Each blade will have a taper type that lends the best characteristics to the combat and handling specific to that blade. Flat grinding will result in a greater edge thickness to flex ratio. This is desirable for the larger heavier blades to ensure the edge holds up and that the impact of the blade is spread over a wider surface. It also results in a heavier blade in comparison to the diamond distal taper which has a high spine to maintain a rigid flex but has more material removed from the edge. We offer several different production blades to fit most every combat style, sword type and budget. We have paired all of our blades with their historically accurate counter parts in the blade product description. Keep in mind when picking out your blade that not all blades will be compatible with all guards, you won’t be able to put a Longsword blade or Feder blade in your rapier guard for example. We have a unique for grinding our blades that leaves some room for specific customization. Things like blade length, tip type and flex can be made to order. When you order your blade choose from the options to include your desired blade length, flex and tip type from the drop down options. Some blades are only available in certain lengths and flex. Our flex ratio is figured in inches of drop from tang shoulder to tip using a 6 oz. weight. You can test your blades with this method to see where your current blade flex is set. Simply clamp your blade tang to a solid surface with the tang shoulder resting at the edge of the clamping surface. Hang 6 oz. from the tip of the blade and use a tape measure to determine how far the blade drops. Here is our flex weight chart: SCA Standard Rapier Flex (F2)- Medium stiffness, compliant to SCA rapier calibration. 1.5″ – 2″ drop @ 6 oz. (170 gr.). Recommended flex for SCA, WMA and HEMA Rapier armored combat. (SCA standard Rapier flex.) Crossover SCA Rapier/C&T and HEMA Flex (F3)- Medium heavy stiffness, compliant to SCA Rapier and Cut & Thrust calibration. 1″ – 1.5″ drop @ 6 oz. (170 gr). Recommended flex for SCA Rapier and Cut & Thrust dual duty, WMA and HEMA armored combat. C&T and HEMA Flex (F4)- High stiffness, compliant to SCA Cut & Thrust and HEMA calibration. .5″ – .75″ drop @ 6 oz. (170 gr). Recommended for SCA Cut & Thrust and HEMA armored combat only. We offer two tip types: 1. Normal Tip, (+ $0.00) the standard rounded tip that accepts a rubber blunt. 2. Spatulated Tip, (+ $11.00) a swelled and rounded tip that offers tip width of no less than 5mm. Be sure to choose your length, flex and tip options when ordering. If not Specified, average values will be assumed.
