Description
We have some fun options for lifelike sparring cutlass simulators based from predominant historical models.
We offer 3 guard types:
- The Briquet “D” ring type guard. Based on the dimensions of the common military pattern that could be found from the late 1700’s throughout the Victorian era, being manufactured in many different countries. We added a bit of depth to the guard to accommodate modern sparring gloves like those made by SPES. Our Briquet Type Guard is made from a single piece 1/4″ 100 grade carbon steel core. This guard matches up well with the 1814 pattern curved blade to make a great robust Briquet trainer. This guard is a plain but solid and will get the job done.
- The model 1804 British cutlass guard. Our version is based on a flat pattern of the first regulation cutlass offered to the British sailor. Our 1804 model guard is made from hardened 4130 spring steel. Choose the 1804 pattern straight cutlass blade for this guard and have an accurate model 1804 trainer.
- The model 1845 British cutlass guard. Our version is based on a flat pattern of the 1845 cutlass chosen by the Board of the Admiralty in 1842 to succeed the 1804 pattern. The guards overall design is based on the 1821 pattern Heavy Cavalry Troopers sword. Our 1845 model guard is made from hardened 4130 spring steel. Choose the 1814 pattern curved cutlass blade for this guard and have an accurate model 1845 trainer.
To supplement the 3 unique historical model cutlass guards listed above, we offer 2 cutlass blade patterns:
- Our 1804 pattern cutlass blade is modeled after the historical pattern of its namesake year. It is a straight, short blade with a total length of 26-1/2″. It is 7/8″ wide at the forte and has a gradual non-linear taper that ends in a 1/2″ rounded and swelled tip. While this blade is narrower than it’s historical counterpart to offer a degree of safe flex, The weight of our narrower blade is made up in it’s edge thickness of 4mm at the fort and 3mm at the tip.
- Our 1814 pattern cutlass blade is also modeled after the historical pattern of its namesake year. It is a shallowly curved short blade with a total length of 26-1/2″. It is 1″ wide at the forte and has a hollow ground taper that ends in a 1/2″ rounded and swelled tip. While this blade is narrower than it’s historical counterpart to offer a degree of safe flex, The weight of our narrower blade is made up in it’s edge thickness of no less than 3mm.
We offer a comfortable rubberized contoured grip based on the proportions of the 1804 model British cutlass that will fit each of our cutlass models.
To tie everything together we use a recessed m6 x 1.0 threaded cap nut that utilizes a size 4mm Allen type hex wrench to tighten everything down.
Finally, to add a bit of standardization to this exciting line of sparring cutlass simulators, when any complete cutlass is made from any of the component parts, the total overall weight is right at about 750 grams!
