Sabre Fencing by Salvatore Pecoraro & Carlo Pessina

Translated by Christopher A. Holzman

A translation of the 1912 book Sabre Fencing, by Salvatore Pecoraro and Carlo Pessina. This book replaced the sabre section of the Maestro Parise’s book as the sabre text for the Italian Army’s fencing masters school, and officially reinstated a variety of Radaellian sabre as the scuola magistrale method.

“Fencing masters Salvatore Pecoraro and Carlo Pessina became Co-Directors of the Scuola Magistrale Militare di Scherma after Maestro Masaniello Parise’s death in 1910. They officially reinstated Radaellian sabre as the method taught at the school. This book, Sabre Fencing, is their text describing that method, and their modifications to it. Also included is their 1910 book, Spada Fencing: Play on the Ground, an update for Maestro Parise’s “Fencing on the Ground”, of 1904. This is one of the first Italian books to discuss the new form of spada, a marriage of the French épée with the crossbar typical of the Italian foil.”

Christopher A. Holzman was a student of the late Maestro Ted Hootman, who was a student of Maestro Giogio Santelli. Santelli’s father and fencing master, Italo Santelli, was a graduate of  the Scuola Magistrale under Maestri Parise, Pecoraro, and Pessina. Mr Holzman was certified as a fencing instructor by the USFCA in 1997, He holds a B.A. in Latin from Wichita State University, a J.D. from Washburn University, and is a practicing attorney in Whichita, Kansas.
