How We Measure Blades:

Our blades are measured from tip to tang shoulder. The tang shoulder is the part of the blade that lines up with the quillon block of the guard. On swords like rapiers and side swords the overall length includes the ricasso section.

The blade pictured below is a 35″ blade. From about 33″ to 35″ is the ricasso section. For many of our guards this section will be inside/behind the front of the guard. The narrow section from 35″ to 39″ is the tang. The sword handle goes over this section, and the threading at the end is for the pommel which screws on to hold the handle and guard in place.
