Szabla

The Szabla is a traditional saber that became both the primary tool of war and a powerful symbol of Poland’s national identity. Emerging in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it drew inspiration from curved blades such as the Turkish kilij and the Hungarian sabre. By the 17th century, the Szabla had become the hallmark of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth’s famed winged hussars and nobility. Its curved form made it ideal for cavalry, excelling in swift slashing strikes from horseback. It was also equally as formidable with both cuts and thrusts when used on foot. Over time, the Szabla evolved into a ceremonial and honor-bearing object, carried by officers and celebrated as a mark of martial valor. Today, it endures as a lasting emblem of Polish heritage and tradition.

We have designed a great sparring safe version of this famed Polish sabre with all of the traditional features and a few advanced features that allow everyone to enjoy their SCA and HEMA journey with a bit of personalization! Some folks like thumb rings and some don’t, so we made the thumb ring easily swappable from right to left handed or completely omittable. ADD A 4MM HEX WRENCH TO YOUR ODER FOR EASY DISSASEMBLY!

Because these Polish sabres are documented with blades of all kinds of different profiles and sizes, we put together a collection of four distinct blades that you can choose from. The total weights are based on F4 Flex, subtract an average of 25 to 30 grams for F3 flex. The belly depth is measured from a line, forte to tip, on the back edge of the blade, to the highest point on the curve.

First, is a multi purpose, 33″ long, 25mm light sabre blade (“Light Cavalry Blade”) that has a profile based heavily on the Ames 1860 US Cavalry blade in my collection. It balances well toward the hand and is quick and maneuverable. It features a belly depth of 5.5cm and @ F4 flex, has a POB of 13cm or @ F3 flex, a POB of 11.5cm with this hardware. The total weight with this blade is 850 grams @ F4 flex.

Next is a heavier 33″ long, 28mm heavy sabre blade (“Heavy Cavalry Blade”) that has a profile closer to the 1796 medium curve profile. It balances out from the guard a bit more and offers more presence and authority in the cut. It features a belly depth of 7.5cm and @ F4 flex, has a POB of 14cm or @ F3 flex, a POB of 12.5cm with this hardware. The total weight with this blade is 875 grams @ F4 flex.

Moving on, our 3rd blade option features a “Yelman” or a widened tip section for extra cutting power and a more forward balance that helps the blade cut effortlessly. For our purposes, we call this blade the “Yelman” option. Easy right? This 28mm blade is 33″ long, and has a generalized profile on the shallower curve side with a belly depth of 6mm. The Yelman section is 26cm long, measuring from the tip. @ F4 flex, this blade has a POB of 15.5cm or @ F3 flex, a POB of 14.5cm with this hardware. The total weight with this blade is 920 grams @ F4 flex.

Our 4th blade offering for this build is a bit more obscure but we love it, so you get to choose it. Doing some research, we came upon a version of a similar sabre from the late 15th century that had what appeared to be a blade very similar to a Messer blade. So, that is what we are offering, sorta like what Blackbeard (Edward Teach) is holding in that famous painting, look it up, you’ll know it when you see it. This blade is our new Standard Messer blade. It is 28″ long, has a belly depth of 5cm, a notched tip and is 32mm wide at the forte. it’s just plain cool and moves like a dream. @ F4 flex, this blade has a POB of 10cm or @ F3 flex, a POB of 8.5 cm with this hardware. The total weight with this blade is 825 grams @ F4 flex.
